Residents will soon be benefitting from the installation of CCTV in Jubilee Park in Ashton-in-Makerfield. Wigan Council will be investing £78,000 to install three cameras, which will be in place by the summer of 2015, and they will be monitored by the council thereafter.

The cabinet member for resources at Wigan Council, Councillor Paul Kenny, said ‘We have worked closely with the police, fire service and our leisure provider WLCT to tackle anti-social behaviour in this area and I am delighted that we have seen a reduction in incidents over the past year.

‘We are confident that installing CCTV within the park will continue to deter people from committing anti-social acts. We are committed to supporting residents in getting out and using their local green spaces as part of the Deal and this investment will help encourage people to continue to visit and enjoy their local parks.’

After a number of incidents, local councillors and Makerfield MP Yvonne Fovargue have worked with local residents in order to campaign for measures to be introduced in the park following the concerns regarding anti-social behaviour in the area.

Ms Fovargue said ‘I’m extremely pleased that the council have agreed to install CCTV in Jubilee Park. It is really important that local people are encouraged to visit their local green spaces and that we work hard to minimise anti-social behaviour in our local communities, so this is a really good move.’

The installation of the equipment on behalf of the council is being organised by WLCT.

Chris Essex Crosby, of WLCT, said ‘We are delighted to be able to support the council in this project to ensure people can continue to enjoy Jubilee Park as a safe and pleasant environment.’
