Wrightington, Wigan and Leigh NHS Foundation Trust has received a Judge’s Award for Innovation for their staff intranet site in the 2019 Interact Excellence Awards.

The intranet, which is used within the Trust as a way of sharing information with staff, was relaunched back in February of last year and, with a new look, came a new name of Wally (WWALI – Wrightington, Wigan and Leigh Intranet).

The new site was developed with input from Trust staff, with the Staff Engagement Team carrying out surveys to see what features were important to people working across all sites.

Staff were even involved in the creation of a mascot for the intranet with a Trust wide competition. A design from staff on Ward 3 at Leigh Infirmary was picked as winner and went on to become the intranet’s namesake of Wally the Walrus.

The judges praised the Trust for the way a balance was struck between professional and fun thanks to the mascot Wally.

Judge Simon Dance said; “WWL’s creative approach showed all-around creativity and vision that translated throughout the project.

“Their prioritisation of staff needs and feedback resonated with judges across a multitude of categories.”

Following the hugely successful launch the Staff Engagement and OD team are keen to continue to improve and develop Wally.

Rachel Holden, Staff Engagement and OD Manager, said; “I am extremely proud of what we have achieved and that the judges have recognised our creative and innovative approach to creating and designing Wally.

“We see Wally continuing to grow and improve with further input from staff as we take it to the next stages of its development”

Alongside the accolade of Judge’s Award for Innovation the team were also finalists in the Best Launch category.

During the launch of the new Intranet site, information stands were set up across the hospital sites to engage frontline staff with the new mascot, Wally, who also appeared in countdown banners, an animated video, a Meet Wally booklet and calendars.

On the launch Judge Elizabeth Lupfer said: “They took the intranet relaunch to an explosive level!

“The thoughtful approach to activation, launch and post-launch engagement is impressive – love the connection to online and offline vehicles and the creation of Wally – makes me want a Wally Walrus myself.”

Since the launch, feedback has been gathered and assessed to demonstrate the growing popularity of Wally with the new intranet being a major conduit for the renovation of internal communication in WWL.
