Unique drop-in event to celebrate ‘Prescot Old Buildings Day’

0

A unique drop-in event celebrating Prescot’s rich history and heritage, will take place on Saturday, 7 March 2015.

The event will be hosted by Prescot Townscape Heritage Initiative (THI), in association with the Society for the Protection of Ancient Buildings (SPAB), and supported by the Heritage Lottery Fund.

You can drop-in any time between 10am and 4pm at Prescot Town Hall, 1 Warrington Road, Prescot.

Throughout the day, there will be a variety of demonstrations, including brick, plaster, roofing / slate, stone and timber.  In addition, there will be a one-off demonstration at 1pm for lime slaking.  You will be able to have a go at some of the crafts yourself, guided by the SPAB craftspeople.

Talks will also take place throughout the day.  Between 11am -11.45am, come along to ‘Getting to know your old building’ or between 2pm – 2.45pm, there will be a talk on ‘Looking after your old building’.  Book your place today on the talks – email owen.barton@knowsley.gov.uk

In addition, you can ask an SPAB expert specific questions about your own building or project between 10.30am – 12 noon and 2.30pm – 4pm.

The event supports the £3.2 million Prescot THI which is transforming the town centre.  Work is nearing completion on 40 High Street – both internally and externally.  The historic brickwork and stonework has been revealed after decades of paint has been stripped away, whilst the upper floors have been refurbished ready for occupation as an affordable home.  The plain twentieth century shopfront has been replaced with a handsome all-timber shop front, complementing the building’s traditional architecture.

Extensive repair and restoration, both internally and externally is also underway at 29-31 Eccleston Street, with works due to be completed by the end of March.  The vacant upper floors are being converted into four affordable dwellings.

The next phase of building restoration and repair is due to commence at 11 Market Place which should see dramatic changes to the exteriors.
