The Union Jack is flying at half-mast over St Helens town hall today as a mark of respect to Jo Cox MP, who has died after being shot and stabbed on a street in her West Yorkshire constituency yesterday afternoon.

Paying tribute, Council Leader Barrie Grunewald said: “Jo was an exceptional person, full of life and an energetic campaigner for the causes she passionately believed in.

“Jo had been to some of the most dangerous places in the world as an aid worker and yet she was slain in a quiet market town in what was a truly horrific attack.

“My thoughts and prayers go out to her husband Brendan, her two children and her extended family at this terribly sad time.”
