Top award for department boosting gender equality

Edge Hill’s Psychology Department has become the first in the University to gain a top award for boosting gender equality.

The department has recently been awarded the Athena SWAN Bronze Award for work promoting and supporting equality and diversity.

It follows the department carrying out a review of policies to show a commitment to equal opportunities and evidence of the promotion of a healthy work-life balance.

Dr Joyce Humphries, Senior Lecturer in Psychology, who led on the award submission, said: “The Department of Psychology are delighted to achieve the Athena SWAN Bronze award.

“Applying for this award reflects the department’s commitment to promoting gender equality for staff and students. We have identified some important challenges and developed a positive programme of change to address these in an action plan.

“We look forward to creating a positive working environment for all and further embedding equality and diversity within the department.”

Head of Psychology Professor Rod Nicolson, said: “I am delighted that the team, led by Joyce, have been successful in gaining the University’s first department award.

“This represents a well-deserved success for an exceptionally demanding task. It is particularly appropriate because one of the defining characteristics of Edge Hill is that it was founded as an institution which broke traditional barriers for women and promoted women’s rights – thereby anticipating the Athena SWAN vision. We are privileged to join in this enterprise.”

Edge Hill University joined Athena SWAN (Scientific Women’s Academic Network), run by the British Equality Challenge Unit, in 2013 and was awarded the institutional bronze award in 2015.
