Thousands gathered in Chorley town centre on Saturday to watch popular comedian, Zoe Lyons, firefighters from Lancashire Fire and Rescue Service and glamourous show performers, transform the town into a sparkly winter wonderland at Chorley Council’s annual Christmas lights switch on event.
The event, which was organised by Chorley Council, marked the start of the town’s Christmas events and saw thousands of people packed into Market Street for a spectacular circus-themed show with songs from The Greatest Showman and other films.
Crowds enjoyed performances from Inspire Chorley Youth Zone and local acts like Zoe Unsworth, The Birchall Brothers and Emilia plus musicians from Chorley Live including Connor Banks and Strum Tap. There were also opportunities for the crowd to have a go with children’s karaoke and prizes from local businesses.
Before Chorley’s Christmas transformation, the comedy circus duo, The Rapide Brothers wowed the crowd with their magnificent juggling and unicycle skills and then the main act took to the stage to perform a medley of everyone’s favourite songs from The Greatest Showman film and more.
The event came to a sensational end when local firefighters, who were part of the team that tackled the moorland fires at Rivington over the summer, took to the stage amid a round of applause and joined the fantastic comedian, Zoe Lyons, to hit the switch and transform the town centre into a magical wonderland.
Councillor Alistair Bradley, Leader of Chorley Council, said: “Chorley’s Christmas light switch on was most definitely the greatest Christmas lights switch on. It was fantastic to see so many people making their way into the town centre to celebrate the start of Christmas in Chorley in such a spectacular way.
“The event had a real community feel to it and it was great to see the whole crowd joining in with the songs and having a good time. All of the performers did a fantastic job and Zoe Lyons was absolutely delighted with the reception she received.
“We’d like to thank everyone who came and showed their support for Chorley town centre and all that we ask is that you continue doing so by shopping local this Christmas and supporting local businesses.”
