Suffragists free library performances

Two more libraries will host free performances soon, due to popular demand.

The ‘Modern Day Suffragists’, a group of local ladies, will perform poems, speeches, playlets and monologues at Leyland and Euxton libraries. They will be dressed in costume from the time.

Following the successful events held at other libraries recently, the additional performances will take place as follows:
• Leyland Library on Saturday 27 October from 11.30am to 12.30pm
• Euxton Library on Saturday 3 November from 11.30am to 12.30pm

The events are to commemorate the suffragists who joined together in 1897 to fight for women to get the vote through peaceful means.

A Vote 100 exhibition about the suffragists will also be available at the libraries for a few days following each performance.

County Councillor Peter Buckley, Lancashire County Council’s cabinet member for community and cultural services, said: “Following on from the extremely successful performances at other libraries recently, more have been organised. People are obviously very interested in this subject and rightly so.

“I’m pleased that we are recognising the importance of women getting the right to vote.”
