Stay Together event appeals for more foster carers

Foster carers and social workers from Knowsley and Sefton Councils joined forces to encourage more people to consider a career in fostering at a special event this month.

There are currently more than 750 looked after children in Knowsley and Sefton and both councils are always on the lookout for new foster carers to provide a loving home for children. So in order to get the message out to as many new people as possible, a team from both authorities held large events over two days in both Knowsley and Sefton, to speak to people about what it means to become foster carers.

At the Knowsley event, the team jumped on board a specially converted double decker bus out in Prescot Cables Retail Park, and invited shoppers on board to talk to social workers and foster carers, to find out first hand just how rewarding a career in fostering can be. The aim of the #StayTogether themed event was particularly to encourage potential carers to think about how they could help keep brothers and sisters in care stay together, by committing to fostering sibling groups.

Fostering could be right for you

Cllr Joan Lilly, Cabinet Member for Children’s Services showed her support on at the Prescot event, handing out balloons and chatting to people about how they could make a difference to the lives of some of our borough’s most vulnerable children.

She said: “Finding people with the right skills to foster siblings remains a high priority for Knowsley Council. This event was a wonderful opportunity for us to allow people who are considering fostering the opportunity to take the first step and find out more about fostering with Knowsley.

“Many people who enquire about fostering often don’t think they will be suitable, but the truth is if you care, have a spare bedroom and time, then you are. If you are interested in fostering, Knowsley’s Fostering Service will help you with advice and information at every stage and you will receive training to assist you in your new role. You will also receive a generous financial allowance and 24 hour support.”
