St Helens Council Leader Councillor Barrie Grunewald, who suffered a heart attack in October last year, is set to resume his responsibilities as Leader once more.

Councillor Grunewald was taken ill while on holiday in Gran Canaria and was initially cared for in a Spanish hospital on the island. After some initial set backs he was deemed well enough to travel and was flown back to the UK just before Christmas.

Councillor Grunewald’s responsibilities as Leader of the council were temporarily transferred to the Deputy Leader, Councillor Andy Bowden.

Since Councillor’s Grunewalds’s return to the UK, he has made a good recovery in local hospitals and has now indicated to the Chief Executive of the council that he feels ready and able to take on his duties as Leader once more.

Councillor Grunewald said: “I am very pleased to be resuming my duties as Leader of the council. I feel I am now ready to focus once more on the job in hand and I am very much looking forward to taking up where I left off. I would also like to express my thanks and gratitude to the hospital and nursing staff who have helped me in my recovery, and to members of the public who have sent me their best wishes and kind words.”
