Stephen Crabb: “Welsh units and reservists make up a significant part of the British Armed Forces – today is our opportunity to thank them and acknowledge their role”.

The Secretary of State for Wales will today (Saturday June 20) attend the North Wales Armed Forces Day being held at Parc Eirias, Colwyn Bay.

He will join hundreds of spectators gathering for a full day of activities including the traditional Drumhead service with band and march past; a Spitfire and Sea King fly past and parachute display.

Stephen Crabb said:

“It is always an honour to attend Armed Forces Day and 2015 is a particularly auspicious year. We are not only marking the centenary of the Welsh Guards but also the 200th anniversary of the Battle of Waterloo, in which Welsh Cavalry played a distinguished role.

“Welsh regular units and reservists have served in distinction in Iraq and Afghanistan, and only this month Her Majesty the Queen honoured the Royal Welsh with new regimental colours.

“Today is an occasion to thank our armed forces for their contributions now and over the years. The bravery of our servicemen and women remains, as ever, the safeguard of our liberties.”

Wales Office Minister Alun Cairns will attend the South Wales Armed Forces Day event which is being held at Cardiff Castle on 27 June.
