Rainbow Staff Going the Extra Mile (or 20!)

Kind-hearted staff from Wrightington, Wigan and Leigh NHS Foundation Trust’s Rainbow Ward, put their best feet forward after organising a sponsored 20 mile Pier-to-Pier walk, to raise money for a new ‘teen zone’.

The sponsored walk, which took place on Saturday, saw ward staff, along with their friends and family, trekking from Wigan Pier to Southport Pier, with the aim of raising £1000. The team left at about 8.15 a.m. on Saturday and 20 miles and several blisters later, they arrived in Southport around 5.00 p.m.

The team were delighted to have exceeded their target and have already raised over £1500 with more to come in and it’s not too late to sponsor them. Anyone wishing to donate to the cause can visit the team’s Just Giving page at www.justgiving.com/wiganrainbowward. All the money raised will go towards helping to fill the new ‘teen zone’ on Rainbow Ward with items such as a TV, jukebox, games consoles, and other therapeutic activities.

This dedicated team were utterly determined to raise as much money as they could to develop the ‘Teenzone’, which will be an area for teenagers to go get away from the noise of the ward with other patients of a similar age. They will be able to chill, chat and listen to music.

Janet Pennington, fundraising Manager says: “A big thank you goes out to ‘The Paper Cup Company’ for sponsoring their T-shirts, to WWL catering for supplying water and fruit to keep them all going on the day, and to all the cafes that supported them on their journey.”

Staff Nurse, Jodie Southern said: “At the minute, the ward has a play room where all the children can go, it has a soft play area and a couple of PlayStations, but that’s mainly for the younger children.”

“Teenagers would like somewhere they can retreat and relax on their own and it will give them somewhere to have peace and quiet and have a chat amongst themselves.”

“We have spoken to some of the patients to identify what they would like to see in there and we have already allocated a space for the new area.”
