Following its successful visit to Central Library, the Rugby League Cares Heritage Exhibition returns to St Helens Library Service.

In partnership with Rugby League Cares and St Helens Library Service, Chester Lane Library has been chosen to host the ground-breaking ‘Rugby League Heritage on Tour’ travelling exhibition.

This important, national collection of sporting memorabilia will be available for all to enjoy at Chester Lane Library between 18 April and 2 May 2015.

As well as historic memorabilia, including a player’s shirt from the first-ever rugby league test match and the ball from the famous 1954 Challenge Cup final replay, the exhibition tells the story of the game’s split from rugby union, the first World Cup, the banning of league in World War Two France and much, much more.

In addition, local St Helens Rugby League FC historian Alex Service has loaned artefacts and memorabilia from his unique collection, with items showing the history of the club and the vital role the Saints have played in the history of rugby league nationally.

Head of Libraries for St Helens Council, Sue Williamson said: “I am delighted that the Rugby League Heritage exhibition is coming back to St Helens Libraries in a different location so that more people can have the opportunity to see it.

“Rugby league is close to the heart of everyone in the borough and it was no surprise that more than 5,000 people visited the exhibition in Central Library over just two days. We hope that people from other rugby league towns will take the opportunity to come and see this fantastic exhibition.”
