Poor performance costs Everton against Utd

Everton went into the game against Man Utd following the news of the death of Everton great Howard Kendall, this news would have had an effect on everybody at Everton, but it should not be used as an excuse for what was a dismal performance. Everton went into the game in pretty good form and had been playing positive football for most of the season so far, but everything seemed to be missing once the match started. Everton would have received a boost when both John Stones and Seamus Coleman made their returns from injury, although it appeared that most of the team were playing as if they were unaware of those around them.

United started the game the more positive of the teams, maybe understandable given the news of the passing of Howard Kendall, and they were not letting Everton players settle on the ball. This pressing from Utd never allowed Everton to settle and as a result their play was never under control and they were constantly in danger of handing away possession. It was not long before Utd opened the scoring; the goal came from what is fast becoming a regular occurrence for Everton when they failed to deal sufficiently with a corner. Juan Mata took the corner, which eventually found its way to Schneiderlin at the back post, who slid the ball into the bottom corner to put Utd 1-0 ahead.

It was not long until the lead was doubled when Hererra made a well-timed run into the box to get on the end of a cross from Rojo before heading home. This made the game a lot easier for Utd, who were now comfortably in control, and although Everton tried to get back into the match there was never any real feeling that they would make any trouble for Utd. Jagielka had a curling effort go over the bar, while Barkley had an effort saved by De Gea. Although Everton tried to improve their play in the second half, there was again no real threat to Utd, they seemed to fall back into the habit of being too ponderous on the ball and not having many ideas of what to do when they got to the final third of the pitch.

The game was killed off just after the hour following a misplaced pass from Jagielka, which went straight to a Utd player, which led to Hererra playing the ball to Rooney who calmly sent the ball past Howard to put Utd 3-0 ahead. It was a disappointing performance from Everton, who never really got started in the game and it will be down to the club to get back to the way they had been performing in recent matches, as if the performance against Utd becomes a regular feature the outlook for the season does not look very promising.

The man of the match award goes to Schneiderlin for a performance which caught the eye due to his constant involvement and the ability to do the simple things correctly. He opened the scoring with his first goal for Utd, and he allowed Utd to perform across the pitch in the manner that they did.
