Two personal and thought-provoking Cultural Hubs performances in libraries ahead

St Helens Library Service is set to host two personal and thought-provoking performances by local drama practitioners as part of St Helens Council’s Arts Council England funded Cultural Hubs – Arts in Libraries programme.

Sophie Tickle and Robert Boyle, produced their performances ‘Monday’ and ‘Stammer’ after working with the council’s library-based Adult Learning Department. The department funded a project with Liverpool theatre company Hope St Limited, to develop the skills of local drama practitioners, setting up a new wave of performers.

Sophie’s ‘Monday’ is a solo performance that physically explores a day in the life of one person taking everything life throws at her as a gift; juggling everyday tasks; considering where she has come from and where she is going to and trying to find the balance between adhering to the ‘ideal’ and trying to get everything she wants to out of life.

‘Stammer’ is an autobiographical piece that challenges people’s preconceptions around stammering through humour and comedy by the man who once drove 100 miles to collect university prospectuses rather than telephone for them, due to his debilitating speech impediment.

Now dealing with his stammer to fulfil his dream of becoming an actor and drama practitioner, Robert will also explore the emotional thought processes and consequences that underpin the turmoil that stammerers go through.

Councillor Jeanie Bell, St Helens Council’s Cabinet Member for Public Health and Wellbeing, said: “Monday and Stammer are set to be cerebral but genuine performances. It’s another way in which we’re using library spaces in creative ways, opening them up to local people to share their ideas.

“Sophie and Robert have produced and developed their pieces over many months, aiming to tell their very relatable stories, which both have the potential to provoke thought and discussion. With plenty laughs and perhaps a few tears, Monday and Stammer will be truly entertaining performances, so don’t miss out!”

Performances of Monday take place at 10.15am (Chester Lane Library), 12.30pm (Newton-le-Willows Library), 2.30pm (Central Library), and 5.00pm (Thatto Heath Library) on Saturday 17 October.

Stammer takes place at Thatto Heath Library at 6.00pm, also on 17 October.

Both performances are free and suitable for all, although Stammer may contain some strong language. For Monday, no tickets are required, just turn up. Tickets for Stammer are available from www.culturalhubs.eventbrite.co.uk or call into any library in St Helens.
