Ormskirk town centre is the place to be on Sunday 25 November as there will be lots of festive fun in the run up to switching on the Christmas Lights.
This year the Christmas lights switch on event has been moved from its Friday evening slot of previous years to a Sunday so even more people can join in the fun and discover Ormskirk for the day.
From 12 noon to 6pm a packed programme of activities will be provided in Ormskirk Town Centre for Ormskirk’s Christmas Gingerbread Market and Light Switch On.
Edge Hill University’s circus performers will be providing walk-about entertainment, showcasing their fantastic circus skills. The amazing Glacial Art Ice Sculptures will be showing off their expertise with a live ice carving of a gingerbread man as a main highlight of the day.
Children’s entertainment will be provided throughout by well known and loved children’s entertainer Mr Stix and a wonderful gingerbread themed workshop will be run by Magical Story Jars. Children’s characters Mickey, Minnie and Spiderman will also be in town meeting and greeting everyone and Silcocks amusements will be providing children’s rides in Aughton Street.
For the adults who attend, indulge in some shopping at fabulous stalls selling gingerbread-themed products, delicious food and gifts, not to mention the numerous wonderful independent shops already open in the town. Stumble across some hidden gems on the Gingerbread Trail, for all the family, around the town. The Chapel Gallery will also feature great entertainment with opportunities for fantastic portraits to take away on the day and face painting for children. A great range of craft demonstrations alongside a wide variety of stalls, that include a selection makers of contemporary crafts including textiles, wood turning, jewellery, glassmaking and ceramics., Not forgetting the Magical Makers Market on at the gallery from November to January 2019.
On the main stage entertainment will include performances by popular local dance and drama school Base Dance, the amazing ‘Ormskirk Rock Choir’ who will wow the crowds with favourite well known songs.
The marvellous compere Andy Jay will bring on the party atmosphere by introducing the well acclaimed Tom Jones tribute act Tony Scarth, a former Stars in your eyes contestant who will capture the power and charisma of the man himself. This will lead up to the traditional Carol Service at 4.30pm followed by the switching on of the Christmas Lights at 5pm.
Dignitaries and fellow guests will assemble at Ormskirk Parish Church and form a procession to the sounds of the Piper to the main stage for the Carol Service conducted by the local clergy assisted by Friends In Unison Choir and Skelmersdale Prize Brass Band.
The Mayor of West Lancashire Councillor Noel Delaney will give a Christmas address as part of the Carol Service and then take up position with guests at the’ magic switch’ in readiness for the countdown to the ‘ Switch – On’ conducted by West Lancashire’s very own Town Crier, Don Evans,
Councillor Yvonne Gagen, portfolio holder for Leisure, said: “Ormskirk will come alive with a splendid display of Christmas sparkle for everyone to enjoy. So don’t miss this fantastic day out for all the family, and don’t forget it is on a Sunday this year!”
The Council is also working closely with the Concourse Centre in Skelmersdale on 1 December on their exciting plans for their Christmas lights switch-on event. More details will be announced very soon.
The Chapel Gallery’s Christmas Market actually starts on Saturday 24 November, taking place between 10am and 4.30pm.
