New figures show biggest increase in people needing food banks for past five years

The Children’s Society responds to the new figures from The Trussell Trust revealing the steepest increase in people needing food banks for the past five years.

823,145 emergency food parcels were given to people in the last six months and more than a third of these (301,653) went to children.

Mark Russell, CEO of The Children’s Society said:

“It is heart-breaking to see such a huge rise in foodbank use, especially amongst families and as we head towards Christmas. These figures clearly show much more needs to be done now to help parents who are struggling to feed their children.

“For many years we have been calling for better emergency support through local welfare assistance schemes, which are designed to help families facing a financial crisis.

“Whoever comes to power next must provide both the support needed to prevent families falling into crisis, and long term, targeted funding for local welfare assistance schemes so that families have somewhere to turn if they do need emergency support.”
