New facilities launched at Pelican Centre

A new gym and community hall have opened at The Pelican Centre in Tyldesley thanks to a £384,000 grant from Wigan Council.

The introduction of the multi-purpose space means that more people of all ages will be able to benefit from the iconic community building.

Trevor Barton MBE, chair of trustees at the centre, said: “This latest development means we can offer so much more to the residents of Tyldesley, from enhanced opportunities to get fit and healthy to a range of adult social care and young people’s services – all under one roof and right on their doorstep.”

Volunteers took over the running of the centre, which also offers swimming facilities, back in 2012.

Donna Hall, Chief Executive of Wigan Council, said: “The partnership we made with the volunteers was the first of its kind for the borough and paved the way for our Deal for Communities. The Pelican Centre is a great example of what can be achieved when we worked together in this way and the volunteers and staff at the building do a fantastic job. We were delighted to further support them through this grant.”
