New apartments in Wigan Borough transform lives of adults with learning disabilities

A new apartment scheme built specifically to enable adults with learning disabilities to lead independent lives has officially opened in Wigan Borough.

Tanfield Court in Borsdane Avenue, Hindley, opened its doors with a garden party for residents and guests.

The complex has 19 spacious modern one-bedroom apartments which are now fully occupied by adults with a range of needs.

Tanfield is owned and managed by Wigan and Leigh Homes and the building was funded by Wigan Council and the Homes and Communities Agency.

Residents spoke of their delight at living in such a modern and welcoming environment.

Ben West, 23, has lived in his apartment since March. He said: “It’s really good.

“The best thing about it is having independence. We can do what we want, when we want and how we want.”

Ben, a keen DJ, hosts music nights at Tanfield Court which are proving popular with residents and people from other supported living schemes.

Tom Fillingham, aged 60, has lived in his apartment since November.

He said: “I love living here. It’s peaceful and nobody bothers you.

“The carers are here if we need anything. All the staff are nice.”

The residents are supported by on site staff managed by Wigan Council and are encouraged to pursue their interests as well as volunteering, training and employment if appropriate.

Stuart Cowley, Wigan Council’s director for adult social care and health, said: “By speaking to residents at Tanfield Court you get an idea of how much they love living here and are able to lead independent and happy lives.

“Tanfield Court is a perfect example of how The Deal has changed how we deliver adult social care in Wigan.

“It is a huge improvement on the traditional settings of the past where residents had little choice on what they were doing and when.

“Now people choose their own furnishings, their own activities and have the support here if they need it.

“Not only is Tanfield better provision but it is also more cost effective than previous models which is important given the savings the council has to make.”

Janice Barton, chief executive for Wigan and Leigh Homes, said: “We are proud to have built Tanfield Court and be the landlord of such a high quality setting.

“The feedback from tenants has been unanimously positive and we are sure their health and wellbeing will be improved by living in such good quality accommodation.”

Tanfield Court is on the site of the former Tanfield School and is conveniently located in Hindley for shops, health centres and leisure facilities which will help residents integrate into the local community.

The number of people with learning disabilities is rising due to increased survival of infants born with conditions likely to give rise to disabilities.

As well as improving accommodation needs Wigan Council’s Deal for Adult Social Care focuses on building on people’s gifts, talents and aspirations and connecting them with their communities.
