Museums open their doors on Heritage Open Days

Gawthorpe Hall

Some of Lancashire County Council’s historic buildings will open their doors this month to celebrate an annual heritage event encouraging people to find out more about their local history.

Heritage Open Days, which runs from Saturday 14 September to Sunday 22 September this year, offer an opportunity for people to find out about local history and to explore their heritage, architecture and culture by getting involved in a number of activities. It is England’s largest festival of history and culture and this year marks its 25th anniversary.

Venues taking part in the event will offer free admission on different days of the celebration. Specially arranged events will also take place.

Clitheroe Castle, Gawthorpe Hall and its grounds, Lancashire Conservation Studios and Lancashire Archives are all taking part in the event. A vintage bus ride to and from Padiham town centre will also be available from Gawthorpe Hall.

Curators will be available at Lancashire Conservation Studios to identify any objects that people bring along with them.

Lancaster Castle, Helmshore Mills Textile Museum, Queen Street Mill in Burnley and the Judges’ Lodgings Museum in Lancaster will also be taking part in the event.

County Councillor Peter Buckley, Lancashire County Council’s cabinet member for community and cultural services, said: “I hope as many people as possible take the opportunity to take part in Heritage Open Days, either by visiting an attraction, or taking part in an event.

“Whether you enjoy visiting castles or mills, looking over historic houses or historic objects or travelling in vintage style there is something for everyone this month.

“There’s certainly a good choice available, to suit all ages and tastes.”

Entry will be free at the venues on the days they are taking part. Venues taking part include:

Clitheroe Library
