A midwife from Wrightington, Wigan and Leigh NHS Foundation Trust, working within a team of Greater Manchester midwives, has been shortlisted for a Greater Manchester Health & Care Champion Award.

Sarah Howard, the Quality and Safety Midwife, at Wigan’s Royal Albert Edward Infirmary, is one of the Saving Babies Lives Champions, from nine maternity providers and one strategic clinical network (SCN) who have been nominated in the Leader Across Boundaries category.

Sarah said; “Working as part of the Saving Babies Lives Champion Team has been an exciting opportunity to improve outcomes for the women, babies and families we provide care for in the Wigan Borough.

“It has enabled us to learn from good practice at each other’s units and share knowledge and skills in making real improvements to services”

The Saving Babies Lives Champions Team is a group of nine midwives from across Greater Manchester and East Cheshire who have been tasked to support and assist their own Trusts with the implementation of the national Saving Babies Lives Care Bundle.

As part of the work, Sarah has been involved in working groups that have developed new regional guidelines for Fetal Growth Surveillance and for care and management when women report reduced fetal movements.

This new guidance has been adopted for roll-out nationally.

Sarah added; “The group has really supported each other and has provided knowledge and skills to facilitate teaching such as audit case review; local guideline development and implementation; liaison with the SCN and local maternity system (LMS) with regard to barriers for implementation and work on reducing those barriers.

“Although the team has been nominated it has been a co-ordinated effort between all the organisations involved to make the process successful in GMEC.”

Jon Rouse, Chief Officer of Greater Manchester Health and Social Care Partnership said; “Congratulations to everyone who has been nominated in the Champion Awards.

“Reading through the nominations was a moving experience. There are clearly so many people out there who, every day, are working hard to better the lives of the people in our region.

“Agreeing the final shortlist was very difficult but I would like to wish the nominees the very best of luck.”

A total of 30 individuals and teams, working in the NHS, a school, local authorities, charities, care homes and many other sectors have been shortlisted across 10 different categories for the award.

A panel made up of representatives from across public services, plus patient representatives, reviewed all 400 nominations and agreed the final shortlist. The winners themselves will be announced at a ceremony in July.

The awards are organised by Greater Manchester Health & Social Care Partnership, the body that oversees the area’s £6bn devolved health and social care budget, with support from the Mayor of Greater Manchester, Andy Burnham.
