Calling all young music maestros – the Mayor of Warrington is searching for the musical stars of the future.

A new competition – hosted by the Mayor, Cllr Faisal Rashid in the grand setting of the Town Hall – will give local instrumentalists and vocalists the chance to shine.

Taking place on 26 November, the Mayor’s Music Competition 2016 is supported by Warrington-based youth music organisation Accent Music Education Hub.

It is open to any musician up to the age of 19, and will be split into two sections – Intermediate – open to students at grade 3-5 standard; and Advanced – open to students at grade 5 or above. There are 10 places available in each section.

Entrants will have a maximum of six minutes to wow the Mayor’s judging panel by performing two contrasting pieces of their choice. First, second and third prizes will be awarded in each category.

There is no entry fee, and places will be allocated on a first-come first-served basis. All entrants will receive four free audience tickets for the event.

Cllr Rashid said: “We have so many gifted musicians and singers here in Warrington and I’m delighted to be providing the stage for them to showcase their talents.

“This is your opportunity to join a very special musical celebration and perform at the Town Hall. So make sure you get your entry form in – and you could be on the road to winning this prestigious music prize.”

The Mayor’s Music Competition 2016 takes place on Saturday 26 November 2016, with the following performance times:

  • Intermediate:from 10am until 12.30pm
  • Advanced:from 1pm until 4pm

Janice Pound, Strategic Leader for Accent Music Education Hub, said: “We are delighted that the Mayor is showing such support for local music by organising this event. Competitions and performance opportunities are essential to promote and support individual pupils’ development and progression.

“There are some exceptional musicians here in Warrington, who both perform and compete nationally, and we are really looking forward to hearing their performances.”

To enter the event, visit www.warrington.gov.uk/mayor and complete the Mayor’s Music competition on-line entry form. Receipt of your form will be confirmed and you will be informed as soon as possible whether your application has been successful.

There will be a piano available at the event. Entrants should ideally make arrangements for their own accompanist to attend, if required. An accompanist can be arranged on request if necessary (please ensure this request is marked clearly on your entry form).
