Make today the day you give up . . . . particularly if you’re pregnant

0

Protecting your baby from tobacco smoke is one of the best things you can go to give your child a healthy start in life. Plus, you’ll save money (which you can use on essentials and treats for your newborn). It’s never too late to stop smoking. Cigarettes contain thousands of chemicals, so smoking when you are pregnant can harm your unborn baby – smoking can restrict the essential oxygen supply to your baby so their heart has to beat harder every time you smoke and can make the baby very ill when born.

Stopping smoking will benefit both you and your baby immediately. You will have fewer complications in pregnancy and reduce your chances of having a miscarriage or stillbirth, you are more likely to have a healthier pregnancy and a healthier baby, your baby is less likely to be born too early and be born underweight.

Stopping smoking will also benefit your baby later in life. Children whose parents smoke are more likely to suffer from asthma and other health conditions, and are more likely to experience lower educational attainment.

The sooner you stop smoking, the better. You don’t need to do it alone as help and support is available through Knowsley’s stop smoking service. Whether it is face-to-face in your own home, telephone or online support you need, Knowsley’s stop smoking service can help. Cllr Eddie Connor, Cabinet Member for Public Health and Wellbeing, said “Smoking carries many health risks at the best of times, but more so when you’re pregnant. Stopping smoking can be tough when the cravings hit, but you don’t need to cope alone. Our stop smoking service can help. You’re up to four times more likely to succeed with the right support and there’s plenty available here in Knowsley.”
