#Made in WN8 – a makers market with a difference!

0

Made in WN8 # is a community based craft market which will showcase and nurture the skills, talents and causes of the residents of the WN8 area. Makers Markets are a regular weekend feature in the wealthy shire towns. The artisan economy plays a vital role in the regeneration of the high street. Artisan Partisan founder, Cath Carmichael and Celebrate Skelmersdale founder, Claire Cooper have joined forces with the help of the Concourse management to bring a makers market to the heart of Skelmersdale. #Made in WN8 will be based at the community kiosk in the market, starting on Friday 22nd November and Saturday 23rd November from 10am to 2pm.

The primary purpose is to contribute to the Well Being of Skelmersdale residents by celebrating diversity, encouraging social cohesion and community engagement and most importantly stimulating the local economy and supporting ethical and sustainable trading, Cath and Claire said, ‘“Buy Local” is something we both feel strongly about promoting and together we decided that we should establish our own market so that we can celebrate and promote our own local craft economy.’

This project has been assisted in its development by the Well Skelmersdale Project and the school of Social Entrepreneurs. Cath Carmichael is the founder of this project and is an SSE fellow. Cath can see that the market can forge sympathetic links with other community groups in the town who are dedicated to the well being of Skelmersdale residents and the improvement of the environment. The project has been supported in its early stages by the Concourse management who have demonstrated their commitment to the community by gifting the stall at the weekend. This is something that I am truly heartened by as it confirms my belief that Skelmersdale has strong threads of altruism running through it. Claire Cooper from Celebrate Skelmersdale has also pledged support and again I am most appreciative.

Paula Gamester has agreed to open the Market.  Paula brought the School of Social Enterprise to Skelmersdale over a year ago and recruited Cath on to the training course that helped her develop the project idea. Paula is a resident of Skelmersdale and founder of the Sewing Rooms and Social Enterprise Champion 2019.

Cath and Claire will be manning the #Made in WN8 stall at the Concourse on Friday and Saturday. So please come and visit our crafters and have a chat about what they do and tell us about what you are interested in and what you would like to see.
