The Mayor of Chorley, amongst other members of the council, made their way to Chorley Hospital to surprise local volunteer, Linda Taylor, with the volunteer of the year award.

Chorley Council’s annual Big Thank You event took place on 17 June where the Volunteer of the Year award was presented for its first year running. Unfortunately, the winner of the award, Linda, was unable to attend so was unaware of her accomplishment until she got the surprise early in July.

Kim Snape, from the Royal Voluntary Service, nominated Linda Taylor for the new Volunteer of the Year award after being impressed by her tremendous involvement with the Royal Voluntary Service at Chorley Hospital on the dementia ward.

She said: “Linda is a fantastic volunteer who goes above and beyond in her role. She turns up week on week to volunteer on the hospital ward. She makes a massive difference with her lively energy and enthusiasm to the lives of those patients with dementia on the ward.”

The Mayor of Chorley, Councillor Mark Perks, presented Linda with the award where he expressed his gratitude for her efforts as a volunteer at the hospital. Linda was overjoyed to receive the award and plans to continue with her volunteering efforts whilst also encouraging more people to volunteer.

Councillor Mark Perks said: “To present Linda with the Volunteer of the Year Award was a great pleasure. She puts a lot of hours into volunteering at the ward so deserved to be recognised for her help.

“She also volunteers for the Stroke Association where she provides stroke survivors with invaluable support and reassurance. Both areas are great to volunteer for so Linda really has exceeded.”

Fellow colleagues attended the surprise visit and applauded Linda as she received her award. They all praised her and thanked her for her support, explaining that she makes the ward that they work on a better place.

The new volunteer of the year award recognises people for their outstanding volunteering contributions to local society. Volunteering is a great contribution to give to our community so it is something that is heavily encouraged.
