Local history talk at Thatto Heath Library

0

To conclude Thatto Heath Library’s centenary year – historian, Dr Tom Preston, will be giving a free talk at the library on Tuesday 19 January at 2pm on ‘The lost gardens of Thatto Heath.’

In the middle of the 19th century, Thatto Heath briefly became a well-known destination for scenic beauty, music and dancing – attracting visitors from far and wide.

Step back in time and hear how local publican, Charles Whittle, created Victoria Gardens, an ornamental pleasure park on land close to his inn, The Engine, which hosted flower shows, dancing and a resident orchestra – and featured pleasant walking routes, grottos and greenhouses – as well as a dining room three times the size of Whittle’s pub.

Come along to find out more. Light refreshments will be served.
