Fans of gothic contemporary fiction will have the chance to meet the highly acclaimed local author, Andrew Michael Hurley, at St Anne’s Library.

From 7pm on Friday 20 November Andrew will be talking about his work and signing copies of his debut novel, The Loney.

The Loney is an atmospheric literary horror story that follows a Catholic family making an Easter pilgrimage to London to try to cure their son.

The novel is mainly set on a stretch of Lancashire coast between the River Wyre and the River Lune.

Andrew is based in Lancashire and he currently teaches English literature and creative writing.

Before he concentrated more fully on his writing, Andrew was a manager at Kirkham Library.

Although The Loney is Andrew’s first novel, he has previously written short stories which have been published in magazines and anthologies. Andrew has also had two short story collections published.

Andrew said: “I’m really looking forward to the evening at St. Anne’s Library. I live in this part of Lancashire, which will make the evening even more special for me.

“I’ll certainly enjoy meeting my readers and answering their questions.”

County Councillor Marcus Johnstone, Lancashire County Council’s cabinet member for environment, planning and cultural services, said: “I’m delighted that we are welcoming Andrew to St Anne’s Library.

“It seems really appropriate as his book is set in Lancashire, Andrew lives in Lancashire and he also used to be a manager at Kirkham library.

“The book is receiving fantastic literary acclaim already. It has been hailed as a modern classic and even the world–famous author Stephen King has applauded Andrew’s work and described it as an amazing piece of fiction.

“I look forward to it hitting the screens in future, as film rights to the book have already been sold.”

The event has been organised by the Friends of St Anne’s Library. The Friends are a voluntary group who support and promote the library through various activities.

Tickets for the event cost £3 which includes refreshments.
