Library talk on forgotten comedy star

0

As part of a yearlong programme of heritage events taking place at St Helens Central Library, local historian Tom Preston will be delivering an informative and entertaining talk on the talented actress Hylda Baker this April.

Born in Farnworth, near Bolton, Hylda Baker was the daughter of a comedian, and made her first stage appearance at the age of 10 at the Opera House, Tunbridge Wells. In the 1920s at the age of 14, she was a leading lady earning £25 per week – a huge sum for the time – as a headline variety act of the music halls, where she played a fast-talking gossip.

Hylda Baker is perhaps most well known for her role as Nellie Pledge in the ITV sitcom ‘Nearest and Dearest’. She developed a string of popular catch-phrases such as “she knows, you know’, and “you big girl’s blouse.”

With a private life as colourful as the characters she portrayed, Tom Preston’s talk includes some previously unknown material on Hylda’s Lancashire background.

‘She knows, you know: The Life of Hylda Baker’ is taking place on Friday, 29 April at 2.00pm at St Helens Central Library. Please note this is a change to the date previously advertised.

This event is free but to reserve your place please contact Central Library on 01744 676954 or email amandabrown@sthelens.gov.uk
