St Helens Council’s Library Service is lending support to Alzheimer’s Society for the national charity’s annual Dementia Awareness Week (15-21 May) as part of the Cultural Hubs – Arts in Libraries programme.

On Monday 16 May, Central Library will host a range of dementia and family-friendly events, from singing and dancing to art installations and films, each designed to increase understanding and raise awareness.

Events on Central Library’s Dementia Awareness Day (16 May) include Reminiscence Karaoke (2:00pm-3:00pm), designed bring back music-linked memories; Lost Narratives (10:00am-4:00pm), a film and installation by artist Jacqui Priestly, which explores loss, disrupted identity and dislocated memories; and Fleeting Moments (11:00am-11:30am and 3:30pm-4:00pm), a music and dance performance by artist Bisakha Sarker.

There’ll also be information stands set up by local services, including Alzheimer’s Society, Healthy Living and the St Helens Carers’ Centre, who can provide support and advice.

Then on Wednesday 18 May at 7:00pm, Central Library will host a special screening of the 2014 film Still Alice, starring Julianne Moore and based on the 2007 bestselling novel of the same name by Lisa Genova. Moore received critical acclaim for her portrayal of a linguistics professor and family woman diagnosed and living with Alzheimer’s disease. Tickets cost £3 (£2 concessions), available from Central Library.

By 2025 there will be an estimated 1 million people living with dementia in the UK. By becoming a Dementia Friend at one of the information sessions being held in local libraries during Dementia Awareness Week, you can help those people to live well and independently for longer.

Dementia Friends information sessions are:

· Wednesday 18 May – Billinge Library, 5:30pm-6:15pm
· Thursday 19 May – Central Library, 12:30pm-1:15pm

The information is also available online at www.dementiafriends.org.uk where residents should book their place at the face-to-face library sessions.

Cultural Hubs is supported using public funding by the National Lottery through Arts Council England and allows St.Helens Council to enliven the borough’s network of 13 libraries with performances, plays, gigs, workshops, courses, events and exhibitions.
