Responding to the industry-wide investigation by Which? into the fire risk of plastic-backed fridges and freezers, Cllr Simon Blackburn, Chair of the Local Government Association’s Safer and Stronger Communities Board, said:
“Fridges and freezers should only be sold if they do not pose a fire risk, and do not contribute to the spread of fire.
“The consequences of faulty appliances catching fire are devastating, with property damaged and in some cases, lives lost. The public need to have confidence in the products they buy and we need robust fire tests not only for consumer products but also materials used in construction.
“Given the increasing question marks about existing fire tests there should be an urgent review of current standards to ensure they protect the public, with any unsafe products on the market recalled by manufacturers.”
