Leigh homeless hub open

Leigh’s new homeless hub has officially opened its doors to help tackle rough sleeping in the borough.

Wigan Council’s new hub based in Leigh, opened up the overnight accommodation aspect of its future homeless provision, meaning that rough sleepers referred to the facility can utilise the emergency beds and support services seven days a week.

The development sees enhanced partnership working between the town hall, local charities and other agencies so that bespoke support can be provided in the hub allowing every individual to receive the personalised help they need. The coming months will see further services offered from the hub and an official launch will be held in October.

Councillor Terry Halliwell, cabinet member for housing and reform said: “This is an important part of our new approach to addressing rough sleeping in the borough and is a really exciting development that brings together many services and community providers so we fully understand the circumstances of every individual.

“This will ensure they receive the best possible support and ultimately, end the need for them to rough sleep.”

In addition to the Leigh facility, Wigan Council is committed to developing a Wigan based hub, which is in the early stages of planning and development.

And, not only has the council invested in the development of the hubs but it is committed to supporting local work through The Deal for Communities Investment Fund so individuals can access services in their communities.

Further investment will also be made into homelessness provision, which will help fund a borough wide outreach service that will operate out of hours and at weekends. More emergency access beds will be available for the homeless and borough-wide support services will be available seven days a week.

In addition to the homeless hubs, Wigan Council has also recently recruited volunteers to become Homeless Champions who support the ongoing town centre work by checking in with people on the streets and signposting them to support.

If you see a homeless person on the streets, please email roughsleep@wigan.gov.uk with as much information as possible (including their location) and our officers will investigate. You will also receive an update on the situation.

Alternatively, our central duty team can be contacted out of hours on 01942 828777.
