‘Leigh for All’ heritage day returns

Leigh Town Centre will be overrun with heritage activities and tours on Saturday 9th September as ‘Leigh for All’ returns.

Organised by the ‘Leigh for All’ heritage day committee, including Leigh Soroptimists, Leigh Parish Church and teams of volunteers, the free event will sit on Civic Square outside Leigh Town Hall.

The day has been funded with help from Wigan Council, Rotary Club of Leigh, Leigh Neighbours and Leigh Canal Festival.

With activities from vintage bus tours to a Pegasus World War Two display, the day will prove to be a fun outing for all the family and aims to inform residents about a significant time in our history.

Councillor Keith Cunliffe, cabinet member for adult social care and lead member for armed forces in Wigan Borough said: “It is important that we remember our history. By organising interactive, enjoyable events like this, we can recognise the service and sacrifice of past generations of local people. It also provides an opportunity for young people to learn about the heritage of their town and its people.

“I invite everybody to head to Civic Square on the 9th September because this event is a great way to bring the community together and you may just find out something you didn’t know before!”

Some of the activities residents can expect to see are:

  • Vintage bus tours
  • Local and family history fair
  • Astley Youth Band
  • Leigh town hall and parish church tower tours
  • Vintage car rally
  • Pegasus World War Two displays
  • Vestry tea and cakes

Wigan and Leigh local studies will also be on hand throughout the day to discuss their plans for the council’s archives service and to showcase their new research room in the former Life Centre.
