Lancashire County Council fails to meet rail responsibilities

At the Lancashire County Council, Full Council Meeting the Labour Group revealed that Lancashire County Council had failed to fulfill its responsibilities to the rail users of Lancashire.

Cllr Erica Lewis, the Lancashire Labour Group’s Shadow Cabinet Member for Highways and Transport said, “This week we have seen chaos on Lancashire’s railways. Thousands of trains late or cancelled, and an untold number of passengers stranded and made late.”

“Given the scale of the problem and its impact on local people and businesses it seems strange that Lancashire County Council has been silent on this issue. Perhaps the current administration hadn’t fully realised its responsibilities for rail.”

“The management of the Northern Rail franchise is shared between Transport for the North and the government. Through out the period of development of the new timetables Lancashire County Council had a seat on the board of Rail North but didn’t take it up. Lancashire County Council has a seat on the board of Transport for the North, but they haven’t spoken out.”

“Rail is a vital form of transport, and it appears that in amongst the council’s pothole crisis it has failed to pay attention to rail. Lancashire’s rail users will rightly wonder why the current Conservative administration failed to take every opportunity to ensure vital services were protected and to hold Northern accountable for the misery it has caused Lancashire’s rail passengers.”
