Knowsley author appeals for amateur football memorabilia

0

The Knowsley Archive service is supporting local author, Mark Campbell, in his appeal for amateur football memorabilia for his new book ‘Huyton’s Titans’.

The book is a celebration of all aspects of football in Huyton, Prescot and Whiston and Mark is looking for old photographs of junior and amateur teams from the area to include.

Two days have been arranged in Huyton and Prescot Libraries so people can bring along their images and any other memorabilia for Mark to scan.

Some interesting items have already been donated to Mark including a programme signed by Alan Bleasdale who managed the Huyton Boys team.

All photos will be scanned and returned the same day and contributors will be acknowledged in ‘Huyton’s Titans’. There will also be the opportunity to share your images with Knowsley Archives’ sporting history collection for future generations to engage with.

If you have something you would like to contribute come along on either of the following dates:

Tuesday 21st August

Huyton Library between 10am and 1pm and Prescot Library between 2pm and 4pm

Tuesday 28th August

Huyton Library between 10am and 1pm and Prescot Library between 2pm and 4pm

‘Huyton’s Titans’ will contain biographies for the 145 players from the area who have played at least one game in the English Football League and the history of the Huyton schools representative side (including the team that won the English Schoolboys Trophy in 1971).

It will cover local amateur and junior teams, the development of women’s football in the area and the history of Knowsley United and Prescot Town football clubs. It will also take a look at the unsung heroes who run the teams, put up the nets, wash the kits, etc.

A taxi driver by day, Mark has been working on the book for a number of years and it is now nearing completion:”I’ve already accumulated a great number of photos, press cuttings and programmes but I’m sure there are lots more out there and I’d be really grateful to anyone who could help with the final push before I go to print.”

Cllr Sean Donnelly, Cabinet Member for Health and Social Care, said:

“There’s bound to be some great memorabilia that local people would be very willing to share with Mark for his book and if we can add this to the borough’s sporting history archive collection as well it will be a great resource for future generations.”
