Imagination Museum brings collections to life

An inspirational performance bringing to life the stories behind museum collections will be held in Lancaster in August.

‘Imagination Museum’ will be performed at Lancaster City Museum on Friday 5 August at 2pm, 3.30pm and 5.30pm.

The performance by award-winning dance company ‘Made by Katie Green’ will entertain visitors with dancing around the museum, using words and movement to illustrate the stories behind the historic objects on display.

Professional dancers Robert Guy, Jessamin Landamore-Coyne and Lucy Starkey are the three main characters in the performance. They each act as an eccentric tour guide character to bring the artefacts to life using words and dance.

The interactive show includes choreographed elements, as well as improvised sections which develop in response to the reaction of the audience.

County Councillor Marcus Johnstone, Lancashire County Council’s cabinet member for environment, planning and cultural services, said: “I think this is a really superb idea. The thought of following the performers around the museum, taking inspiration from the collections on display as they go sounds terrific.

“The audience will be engaged through presenting dance in an unusual way that is totally unique to each venue.

“Visitors will have the chance to see professional dancers in a totally different context, where they probably haven’t seen it before. The performance also combines dance with local heritage.

“I’m sure that it will also inspire visitors to go and explore the museum themselves, in a novel way.

“This performance will entertain as much as it informs. It sounds intriguing with its mix of dance and history.”

First Friday, a monthly mini-festival of the arts organised by Lancaster Arts City, are contributing towards the cost of this event.

The performance is suitable for all ages.

Each performance is free to attend and there is no need to book – you can just turn up.

As well as directing Made by Katie Green, which was formed in 2006, Katie works as a performer, choreographer, teacher and mentor across the UK. Katie has also worked as a mentor for Youth Dance England Young Creatives schemes since 2009.

The Imagination Museum has been created in collaboration with writer Anna Selby. The original music is provided by Max Perryment.
