Heartfelt donation for those most in need

Students from Wigan and Leigh College have made a donation to patients from Wrightington, Wigan and Leigh NHS Foundation Trust.

The large donation of toiletries and sanitary products comes as part of the college’s #letlovegrow challenge. The challenge was set to each department by their Chaplaincy Team and has encouraged numerous acts of kindness from students and staff alike.

The items were collected by staff and Health and Social Care students over a few weeks and there are plans to try and support the cause with donations throughout the year.

On the decision to donate to the hospital Laura said; “The college is really big on having partnerships within the community and raise for a lot charities in the local area.

“There’s an obvious need for these products and it’s such an importance cause. We’re more than happy to help and support in any way we can and the students really do commit to giving back to causes like this.”

The majority of the donated items will go to patients seen by Bridget, the Trust’s Independent Domestic and Sexual Violence Advisor.

In her role, Bridget’s aims are to keep patients safe and provide a rapid response regarding domestic and sexual abuse.

The Trust’s stock of toiletries for victims of domestic and sexual abuse has been rapidly decreasing over the past months, as Bridget reaches out to more patients, making the donation most welcomed.

Bridget thanked the college saying; “I’m just so grateful to the students and the staff at the college for their hard work in pulling this donation together.

“A lot of the time, the people I see are left with simply the clothes they stand up in. These toiletries will help to provide an extra support and comforts to those people when they’re going through a difficult and possibly traumatic time.”

Fundraising Manager, Janet Pennington, echoed Bridget’s sentiments adding; “On behalf of the charity, and everyone at the Trust, thank you so much.

“It’s brilliant to see students in the community supporting their local hospital and we couldn’t do what we do without generous donations like this.”

Also present at the donation was Amanda Cheesman, Assistant Director of Nursing, who works very closely with the college and its students.

Amanda said; “Our partnership with the college has gone from strength to strength and it’s so heart-warming to see the students giving back to our patients across the Trust.

“Their generosity shows so much about how caring the students are and I wish them all every success as they continue in their studies.”
