Healthy Living’s Picnic in the Park for World Suicide Prevention Day

To mark World Suicide Prevention Awareness Day on Saturday 8 September, St Helens Council’s Healthy Living Team is holding a family fun day in Taylor Park to spread the message that ‘It’s Okay to Talk.’

Residents are invited to pack a picnic and head down to Taylor where they can take part in family games and discover how to keep themselves well through Healthy Living taster sessions based around ‘5 Ways to Wellbeing’ – and general information which will be available from a number of stalls.

Encouraging residents to come down to support the event, St Helens Council’s Cabinet Member for Better Health and Building Arts & Culture, Councillor Gill Neal, said: “As a council we are committed to working with partners to reduce suicide rates in the borough – and events like this are an ideal opportunity to get people together, while promoting the many services and programmes available in St Helens that support mental health and wellbeing.

“The day promises to be a fun occasion for all, so it would be fantastic to see the community come down, have fun – and see what’s on offer.”

Healthy Living’s Picnic in the Park event – which forms part of the St Helens 150 Heritage Open Day events taking place across the borough between 5-14 September – will take place from 11:00am-4:00pm on Saturday 8 September.

Residents can now learn techniques to enable them to reach out and talk to someone they are concerned about by taking part in a free online suicide prevention training course.

Taking around 20 minutes to complete, the training consists of an interactive online session which contains videos, coaching questions and different scenarios – which will show you how to recognise the warning signs of suicide and how to protect someone who is contemplating suicide.

Save a life – take the training by visiting www.zerosuicidealliance.com and following the on screen instructions.
