Lancashire County Council and Active West Lancashire have teamed up to provide 6 sessions of Tai Chi in Tawd Valley Park, Skelmersdale. Starting on Saturday 27th July 2019 from 12 noon to 1pm (meeting at the library at 11.45am). The sessions are being organised by Heather Reade, Tai Chi & Qi Gong Master, who already runs successful classes right across West Lancashire.

Tai Chi is a very effective exercise for a person’s entire wellbeing. People can start and continue to progress to higher level no matter your age or physical condition. It is so enjoyable that millions of people around the world are practicing it. Tai chi was created based on nature and harmony. The gentle flowing movements contain inner power that strengthens the body, improves balance and brings better health and harmony to people’s lives.

Originating in ancient China, tai chi is an effective exercise for health of mind and body. Although an art with great depth of knowledge and skill, it can be easy to learn and soon delivers its health benefits. For many, it continues as a lifetime journey. There are many styles and forms of tai chi, the major ones being Chen, Yang, Wu, another Wu (actually two different words in Chinese) and Sun. Each style has its own unique features, although most styles share similar essential principles.  These essential principles include the mind being integrated with the body; fluidity of movement; control of breathing; and mental concentration. Total harmony of the inner and outer self comes from the integration of mind and body, achieved through the ongoing practice of tai chi.

Cllr John Fillis, Labour Shadow Health and Wellbeing, said “Prevention is better than cure so it’s very important that we introduce people to a variety of different types of activities that improve their wellbeing. I know from personal experience that Tai Chi does enable people to participate no matter their age or ability. You don’t need any equipment to train just easy fitting clothes and a good pair of flat shoes or trainers.”

“It’s important that we invest in people’s wellbeing as it pays back massive dividends in the long term for our NHS, individuals and local communities. Tai Chi also provides a fun factor that will encourage people to do more.”
