It’s been 50 years since Booby Moore lifted aloft the Jules Rimet Trophy, as England beat West Germany 4-2 in the World Cup final to be crowned world champions.

But 1966 was also a great year for Merseyside teams, too, with Everton winning the FA Cup and Liverpool becoming League Champions for the seventh time.

In celebration of the wonderful world of football, near and far, Central Library will be hosting a fortnight of ‘football fever.’

From the 25th – 29th July, view an exhibit of World Cup Football memorabilia from local enthusiasts featuring Wembley seats, football cards and First Division club programmes from the 1965-66 season.

Sports historian Alex Service will host an afternoon of childhood football memories on Monday 25 July from 2:00pm with footage of the famous ’66 final.

Then from the 1st– 5th August, St Helens Town A.F.C will commemorate its 70th anniversary with an exhibition at St Helens Central Library.

The exhibition will look at some of the key milestones over the past seven decades and look at some of the famous faces to pull on the Town shirt, including Bert Trautmann, Bill Foulkes and John Connelly.

It is hoped the Macron League Challenge Cup will be on show, courtesy of the Hallmark Security Football League. While Town have never won the trophy in its current guise, former captain and current Town President Alan Wellens lifted the prestigious piece of silverware back in 1972 when it was the Lancashire Combination Championship trophy.

Fifteen years later, Alan Wellens managed Town to their greatest ever victory with an FA Vase Wembley win against neighbours Warrington Town. A replica of the trophy will be on show along with a host of Vase final memorabilia. Town’s Barry Lowe has kindly agreed to loan the exhibition his Wembley blazer, match shirt and his FA Vase medal.

The club’s first Cup final success came in 1949 when they lifted the George Mahon Cup against Runcorn at Prescot Cables and Town are hoping the silverware will also make an appearance during the event. (Courtesy of the Liverpool County Premier League)

Club Chairman John McKiernan said: “It looks like being a superb event which will provide a great start to the season for us. It’s an opportunity for the local community to see a whole range of club memorabilia, photographs, programmes and historical documents from the club and Local History archives.

“The exhibition will also take a brief look at the original club which operated between 1901 and 1928 and we’re always hopeful that some new items and stories about the club are still to be unearthed.

“Looking ahead, this season’s brand new kit will be on show which will see the team play in blue and white for the first time since 1999-2000.”
