Food hub to open its doors in Kirkby

Knowsley Council’s Public Health team, One Ark (a Knowsley based investment charity which is part of the First Ark group) and Can Cook CIC, are teaming up to support the establishment of a food hub project in Knowsley.

The hub will be based in Kirkby and will help to address a range of issues including food poverty, improving health and healthier eating as well as reducing food waste and creating job opportunities.

It will complement the Knowsley Trussell Trust Foodbank, which has provided emergency food to over 12,000 people in the borough since opening its doors in September 2011.

Whereas the Foodbank provides a range of non-perishable items for families to produce meals for up to three days, the hub will provide fresh food as well as help on how to prepare nutritious meals.

The project will help to support the council’s priority to improve the health and wellbeing of local residents by providing high quality, low cost fresh food, providing a greater choice and providing tasty recipe ideas, which will include cookery demonstrations.

Based on Cherryfield Drive Kirkby, the hub is due to open it’s doors in July this year.

The hub will offer the opportunity for local people to attend cookery courses, some of which will be accredited. These courses will provide on the job training opportunities for local people.  A range of freshly baked breads will also be available to purchase and fresh meals prepared on-site will be served in a community space.  Five days of fresh produce, as well as store cupboard ingredients, will also be provided, enabling residents to create five days worth of healthy meals using recipes provided.

Cllr Jayne Aston, Ward Member for Cherryfield Ward, said “This is a fantastic initiative for our residents, which will not only promote healthy eating, through both fresh ingredients and tasty recipe ideas, but will also provide a range of training opportunities and community meeting place.  I look forward to the hub opening it’s doors in July and I’m sure the local community will welcome the benefits this will bring.”
