E ROOMS pays tribute to Leon

On Saturday 11th March E ROOMS in Skelmersdale hosted an all day event of entertainment in celebrate the life of Leon Murphy, a popular, well respected and much loved musician and E ROOMS tutor who passed away on 15th February.

Leon, 29 from Orrell was diagnosed with Grade 4 Astroglioma, a rare form of brain cancer in 2010 and despite having undergone extensive surgery, chemotherapy and radiotherapy bravely continued life as normal, performing in several bands as well as teaching many young people Bass guitar at E ROOMS.

Leon initially responded well to treatment and was in remission for a short period of time, but despite a second operation and further chemo and radiotherapy, his condition was diagnosed as terminal in August 2016.

The event in memory of Leon featured some of his former pupils, and local musicians, as well as former band mates from some of the many bands of which he’d been a member.

On what was a very emotional night Leon’s friends in The Insurgents, Sick Minds, Scurvy Dogg, The Adjusters, Kinky Oyster performed to a packed crowd in Leon’s honour.

The highlight of the evening was the unveiling of a portrait of Leon painted by local artist and Leon’s friend Jack Woodward and a plaque dedicating the E ROOMS Live room in his memory.

E ROOMS Director Dave Beeston said “Leon was a much loved and respected friend to E ROOMS, a fantastic musician and a beautiful soul, he will be sadly missed by everyone. He was a fine bass player and guitarist, who played with passion and enthusiasm. His strength and courage over the last seven years has been an inspiration to all that knew him. We are thankful to him for that and all he did for us and we are very honoured that our venue, where he performed many times will now be known as The Leon Murphy Live Room”

Further events in Leon’s memory are also to be held at The Old Courts and Boulevard in Wigan.
