Draft Landlord Services Disabled Adaptation policy

0

People are being invited to give their views on a draft policy to guide how West Lancashire Borough Council provides adaptations to for its disabled tenants.

The Council has a statutory duty to help eligible disabled tenants or those with long‐term illness who require an adaptation to their home to enable them to live independently. Adaptations to assist carers in their caring role may also be eligible for grant support.

The draft Landlord Services Disabled Adaptations Policy has been drawn up to help officers deliver the adaptations in a fair way to help as many people as possible and to inform applicants of the criteria the Council will apply.

A public consultation has been started by the council so people can give their views on the policy. As well as tenants and the general West Lancashire public, the Council will consult with a number of organisations including the WL Physical Disability Partnership and Age UK.

Councillor Jennifer Patterson, portfolio holder for Housing, said: “This is a very important document as a suitable well-adapted home can be a key factor in enabling a disabled person to live well and independently.

“The purpose of this policy is to assist officers in delivering an adaptations programme and to ensure fair and consistent treatment for all tenants with disabilities or long-term illnesses who require such assistance. So please give us your views to help us shape a policy that is suitable for all concerned.”

The draft policy aims to clarify a number of issues including maximum funding, how the adaptations affect right to buy applications and who is responsible for maintaining them.
