Officials have said that dozens of people have drowned after a boat, which had been carrying at least 250 African migrants to Europe, capsized close to the Libyan capital. According to a spokesman for the Libyan coastguard there are still bodies being retrieved 11 miles off the coast of Tripoli’s Tajoura district.
The spokesman added that there had been 36 African migrants, which included three women one of whom was pregnant, who had been rescued.
Since the overthrow of Muammar Gaddafi in 2011, Libya has grown increasingly lawless, which has helped to make it a migration hub for sub-Saharan Africans who are looking to find a better life for themselves.
Each year sees there being scores of people who are killed, while they are making the dangerous journey to Europe.
