Don’t miss the first ever Parbold Art and Music Street Festival

Parbold will burst into life in an explosion of colour with the first ever Parbold Art and Music Street Festival on Saturday 5 and Sunday 6 September.

Organisers West Lancashire Borough Council’s Arts Development Service, Parbold Community Association and Parbold Unlimited teamed up with professional artists Andy and Sharon Shaw and writer Sarah Schofield on workshops for local people across Parbold to prepare for this colourful spectacular.

Many of the fruits of their labours will be seen in the amazing adventure of the Tall Tail of Parbold Hill. This involves a procession which will leave from outside the Yours Is The Earth café at 2pm on Saturday and 5pm on Sunday, and wind its way to the festival stage behind the Railway Hotel. Here a performance will take place of the tall tail about a mythical creature that lives under Parbold Hill.

Other venues across Parbold are preparing to host many great attractions on what promises to be a magical weekend for the village.

Councillor Yvonne Gagen, portfolio holder for Leisure, said: “The Parbold Arts and Music Street Festival is gearing up to be an amazing event and I am sure this weekend will live long in the memory of everyone in Parbold.”

The fun starts at midday at a number of places in the village. Bands and musicians are due to play on the festival stage all through the weekend and Pick Six kick off the entertainment there on the Saturday. Other bands due to perform include Liverpool Shanty Kings (Saturday 1pm); Under the sun and over the moon (Saturday 4pm); Brian Gold (Sunday 2pm); and the Mathews Brothers (Sunday 4pm).

Street entertainers will be performing around the village on both days and the New Orleans Band will be playing on the streets on the Saturday. Community stalls and a barbecue will be on the canal bank all weekend and barges on the canal will provide a festival of lights on the Saturday evening.

From midday to 6pm on Saturday Parbold Library will host an art exhibition and the Women’s Institute building hosts a Lancashire Society exhibition, with folk music being performed at 1pm, 3pm and 5pm.

Local businesses are also getting into the festival spirit. The Windmill pub hosts a hog roast and mini cider festival and musical performances at midday, 2pm and 4pm on the Saturday and 1pm, 3pm and 5pm on the Sunday.

Over at the Wayfarer pub you can try the Problem Child Beer Festival on both days with musical entertainment on stage at 2pm on the Saturday and 1pm, 3pm and 5pm on the Sunday.

If you prefer coffee then Yours Is The Earth is hosting live music sets at 1pm, 3pm and 5pm on the Saturday and 2pm and 4pm on the Sunday.  Coffee etc café will host an exhibition featuring preliminary artwork that artists Andy and Sharon Shaw did with young people from Parbold Douglas Academy and Our Lady and All Saints Primary schools and families throughout August, along with the initial ideas for the storyline which developed from workshops with the schools and local community facilitated by creative writer Sarah Schofield. The results from the workshops have contributed to the tall tail and produced short stories, poems and visual artwork that will be displayed at the coffee shop from the start of the festival and carry on until 17 October.
