Cruise customer’s donation to dementia patients

Dementia patients at Wrightington, Wigan and Leigh Foundation Trust’s Royal Albert Edward Infirmary were given a generous donation of Twiddlemuffs from the customers of a major holiday company.

Jean Ramsdale, Dementia Lead Nurse and Josephine Broderick, Dementia Specialist Nurse, were presented with the kind gift from tour operator, Shearings Holidays, whose customers had spent time on holiday over the past summer making the knitted tubes accessorised with ribbons and buttons on both the inside and out.

Over 100 Twiddlemuffs, that are used to help ease agitation and calm dementia patients, were donated by the company, based at Waterside House, Wigan Pier Business Park, handmade during relaxation time on their river cruise holidays.

Jean Ramsdale said: “The Twiddlemuffs are a real comfort for patients living with dementia on our wards as they can keep their hands and minds occupied. We have found that they have a positive effect on patients by keeping them comforted, as well as encouraging movement and brain stimulation.”

Jane Atkins, managing director at Shearings Holidays commented: ““It is our pleasure to hand over these Twiddlemuffs that were generously crafted by our travellers.

“This further supports the fundraising we do for the Alzheimer’s Society and it is doubly rewarding to know that these are going to patients in our local area.”
