Counterfeit goods and Illegal worker found after trading standards sting

0

Our trading standards team recently visited businesses in Ashton, Hindley and Leigh who were suspected of selling counterfeit goods after a tip off from members of the public.

In a joint operation that also included Immigration and Electricity North West, they found:

  • Illicit tobacco, which was seized, and which included 115 packs of cigarettes and tobacco with a value of around £500, with some packs found to be counterfeit
  • One premises had a tampered electricity meter so the power was immediately cut off
  • An illegal worker who is now being investigated by Immigration Services.

Julie Middlehurst, group manager for regulatory services at Wigan Council, said: “It’s really disappointing that some people choose to completely disregard the law.

“This is a positive outcome for all those involved, and I’m extremely pleased that officers have been able to remove the tobacco. As illicit tobacco is often much cheaper, it makes it easier for our children to start smoking.”

If anyone wishes to report the sale of illegal tobacco they can ring in confidence 01942 827479 or email ts@wigan.gov.uk
