Council thanks residents for valued feedback on Leisure and Wellbeing Hubs

Good progress is being made on the exciting plans for two new Leisure and Wellbeing Hubs to replace Park Pool and Nye Bevan Pool.

West Lancashire Borough Council recently held a public consultation on the proposals to build the new facilities on Churchfields, Ormskirk, and Ingram in Skelmersdale. The Council is grateful to the large number of residents who took the time to respond.

While a significant majority of respondents were in favour of the developments a number of Ormskirk residents raised concerns about loss of greenspace and other potential issues such as flooding and traffic management at the Churchfields site. The Council has considered these issues throughout the preparation of plans for the proposed new hubs, and will continue to do so.

Additionally, should the Council proceed with the proposal to use the Churchfields site, it intends to return the existing Park Pool site to parkland as a compensatory measure for the loss of greenspace and to better link the new Hub to the town centre. The public would be consulted regarding the creation of the new parkland. The next stage of the process will see surveys being carried out to assess the suitability of each site. These will further examine the concerns raised by residents.

These surveys do not mean that building work is starting on either scheme. If the surveys indicate that the proposed sites are viable the Council would carry out a further consultation exercise which would form part of the planning application process for the hubs.

The health and wellbeing of local people is a key priority in the Council Plan and the Leisure and Wellbeing Hubs proposal plays an important role in helping us achieve our ambitions in this area.

Councillor Yvonne Gagen, portfolio holder for Leisure, said: “The Leisure and Wellbeing Hubs are exciting proposals and provide significant opportunities for residents to improve their health and social wellbeing.

“Thank you to everyone who took part in the consultation process and I am really pleased the majority of people support these exciting proposals. We are listening to people’s concerns and will be considering these as we proceed with investigating the feasibility of the proposals.”
