Council to launch campaign against domestic abuse

0

Warrington Borough Council will launch the Warrington White Ribbon Campaign on Wednesday 25 November to target domestic abuse within the borough.

The annual campaign highlights the current extent of domestic abuse and will call on men, women and young people to take action. It is an international effort primarily aimed at men and boys, encouraging them to pledge that they will never commit, condone or remain silent about abuse of women.

The local campaign is organised by the Warrington Domestic Abuse Partnership and runs until 10 December 2015.

People can support the campaign by wearing a white ribbon, which are available from New Town House, Buttermarket Street during the campaign and from the Christmas market in the town centre on Saturday 28 November.

Cllr Pat Wright, executive board member for statutory health and adult social care, said:

“Domestic abuse affects one in four women and one in six men at some stage in their lives and it can have harmful effects on their children. We are absolutely committed to tackling this in Warrington and are once again asking men, women and young people get the message out there by wearing a white ribbon to show that they believe domestic abuse is wrong and will not be tolerated.”

Ann McCormack, the council’s assistant director for quality assurance, who is also chair of the Warrington Domestic Abuse Partnership (WDAP), said: “For the next two weeks council staff will be rattling tins and selling white ribbons for the Warrington White Ribbon Campaign to raise awareness of domestic abuse and to help people who are affected to find support.”

James Howes from Warrington Wolves Charitable Foundation said,

“We at Warrington Wolves are all backing the White Ribbon appeal and the players are proud to be wearing the new white ribbons which have a rugby ball in the centre. I think it is fantastic that we are trying to challenge domestic violence within our society. Making people aware it goes on via this campaign may go some way to helping the violence to stop.”
