Cornish charity challenge for Wigan pensioner

A local resident has raised over £300 for Wrightington, Wigan and Leigh NHS Foundation Trust’s Three Wishes Heart and Lung Fund.

Maureen Charles, 79 from Marsh Green, Wigan, wanted to raise money for the Three Wishes Heart and Lung Fund as this is a charity close to her heart.

And, as walking is a passion for Maureen, herself and her husband, Frank, took to the cliffs of Cornwall to walk a 10 mile coastal path from the centre of Newquay to Porth Beach.

“The day was hot and the cliffs were steep, but I kept going as I was determined to get all my steps in,” said Maureen.

As Wigan’s Royal Albert Edward Infirmary is Maureen’s local hospital, she wanted to raise money for the Heart and Lung Fund due to her close relatives previously being treated in the Coronary Care Unit.

Dr Nayyar Naqvi, Cardiology Consultant said; “I am extremely grateful to the people of Wigan and Leigh for their tremendous contributions over the years that have helped us set up such a great cardiology department.

“We wouldn’t be here without people like Maureen.”

The goal was to reach nearly 20,000 steps, however Maureen went above and beyond to reach an astonishing 22,871. The walk took around five and half hours, after setting off at 9.30am.

The money raised has been donated by close family and friends, as well as her local Slimming World group.

Carolyn Dereszkiewicz, Head of Nursing for Scheduled Care said; “I want to say a huge thanks to the donators of Wigan for the continued support of the Three Wishes Heart and Lung Charity, which allows us to provide fantastic facilities and an environment for both patients and their visitors and relatives.”

Maureen’s niece also works at the hospital as a Senior Domestic Supervisor, who let her aunt know about the hospital’s charity, Three Wishes.

“What Maureen has done is amazing, especially the distance that she walked.

“We’re so very grateful for her donation and her hard work in completing her challenge,” added Janet Pennington, Three Wishes Fundraising Manager.
