The winners of the 13th annual Fantastic Book Awards have been chosen by young readers in Lancashire.

Pupils aged nine to eleven from 140 schools across the county have read six books from a list of 30, during the autumn and spring terms.

The children voted for their favourite at the end of the spring term and the winners were announced at ceremonies held in five primary schools earlier today:

Guy Bass – Aidan Abet Teacher’s Pet
Swapna Haddow – Dave Pigeon
Sam Hearn – Sherlock Holmes and the Disappearing Diamond
A. L. Kennedy – Uncle Shawn and Bill and the Almost Entirely Unplanned Adventure
Mark Powers – Spy Toys

The main aim of the awards, organised by Lancashire County Council’s School Library Service, is to support reading for pleasure and enjoyment by introducing newly-published fiction titles to nine to eleven year-old pupils.

County Councillor Peter Buckley, Lancashire County Council’s cabinet member for community and cultural services, said: “The awards involve thousands of children from primary schools across Lancashire avidly reading and then discussing books. Then they vote on the books that they like the best at the end of the spring term.”

“This is a fun way to engage with our children to encourage them to read and help us to maintain the county’s high levels of literacy.

“We particularly like the books to be read in a book club, so that the pupils can share their thoughts with each other in a relaxed setting.

“I’m delighted the Fantastic Book Awards have enjoyed another successful year, and that more children have been encouraged to discover the pleasure of a good book.”

The five primary schools where ceremonies were held are:

Heyhouses Church of England Primary School, Lytham St Anne’s
Longsands Community Primary School, Preston
All Saints’ Church of England Primary School, Chorley
Holy Saviour Roman Catholic Primary School, Nelson
Christ the King Roman Catholic Primary School, Burnley.
