The Chapel Gallery’s 2017 programme kicks off with three fantastic events, including one dedicated to Ormskirk itself.

Celebrating Ormskirk Heritage is a showcase which runs from Wednesday 25 January – Saturday 25 March.  It shows how the town has a rich history; from a medieval market and a famous Gingerbread story, to Georgian opulence and free medical services for the poor. This is a lively look at Ormskirk heritage, seen through the detailed stage sets and sensitive drawings of Ormskirk artist, Angie Thompson. Discover the stories that make our town unique.

This exhibition is funded by West Lancashire Borough Council and the Heritage Lottery and is part of Ormskirk Community Partnership’s Ormskirk Gingerbread Project – Celebrating Ormskirk’s Heritage. The artworks produced will also be available for hire meaning that schools, colleges and groups can have their own exhibition about Ormskirk’s unique history.

Another showcase the Great Art Quest is a celebration of young peoples’ imagination! The Chapel Gallery has been selected by the prestigious Children in the Arts organisation to be a Great Art Quest venue. Inspired by visits to the Chapel Gallery, and working with expert facilitators, Sharon Kelly, Andy Shaw and Izzie Major, talented young people from four Skelmersdale Schools – Little Digmoor, St Francis of Assisi, Hillside and Brookfield Park – have collaborated to produce this lively showcase of their work.

The Great Art Quest runs from Wednesday 25 January – Saturday 25 March 2017 and is a UK-wide arts project by Children & the Arts, sponsored by GAM (UK) Ltd.

Visitors to the Magical Geometry exhibition will find artworks inspired by the spirals of galaxies and shells through to our very own DNA double helix, the unique beauty of hexagonal snowflakes and the ancient architecture of the Egyptians. The complexity of geometry in all its varied forms is at the heart of our world.

The resulting exhibition, which runs from Saturday 28 January to Saturday 25 March is a celebration of shape, symmetry and pattern – the mysterious magic of geometry.

A special opening event for the exhibition takes place on Saturday 28 January, when visitors can enjoy free, family-friendly activities.

The exhibiting artists are: Emma Bennett, Louisa Chambers, Damian Cruikshank, Stephen Cunliffe, Lisa Jones, Collette Lilley, Arthur Roberts and Jason Thompson.

Councillor Yvonne Gagen, portfolio holder for Leisure, said: “These exciting attractions sound like great fun to start 2017 at the Chapel Gallery so come along and enjoy the artwork and activities.”
